Mexico Roster for World Cup Qualifiers: Veteran team against USA, Canada in November

These are probably the toughest away games left on Mexico’s road to qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. And the coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino will go to matches with his most experienced team.

The Mexico coach released his roster of 26 men for November qualifiers in the US (November 12) and Canada (November 16) on Thursday, and there are no big surprises. All the players based in Europe have been called: Raul Jimenez (Wolves), “Tecatito” Corona (Porto), “Chucky” Lozano (Naples), Andres Guardado (Real Betis), Hector Herrera (Atletico Madrid) and Nestor Araujo (Celta Vigo).

The team includes five players from Monterrey, winner of the recent CONCACAF Champions League and four others each from Club America, leaders of the Liga MX, and reigning champions Cruz Azul. The biggest surprise is the inclusion of Chivas Guadalajara midfielder Ricardo “Canelo” Angulo, who was part of the team that lost in Ecuador in Charlotte, NC, last week.

The most notable absence is arguably MLS veteran Jonathan Dos Santos (LA Galaxy). Uriel Antuna also did not make it, and neither did his injured teammate Chivas Alexis Vega, who is only now close to the return. Even a handful of young prospects failed to cut: Gerardo Arteaga (23), Diego Lainez (21) and Jose Juan Macias (22).

Two Mexican-American nationals, David Ochoa (Real Salt Lake) and Julian Araujo (LA Galaxy), both recently serving in the Mexican national team, were not among the 26 players.

Mexico, ranked No. 9 in the world, leads the qualifying standings in the CONCACAF region with eight games to play. After three consecutive away games (against the United States, Canada and Jamaica), Mexico will host three in a row before closing qualifiers with games in Honduras and home against El Salvador (rankings and schedule below).
