Microsoft’s Surface Duo was one of the most interesting smartphones of 2020, despite the brand insisting that the device was not exactly a smartphone. With a unique inward dual display, the Surface Duo remains a unique Android device on the market like no other. However, that hasn’t stopped Microsoft from reading a second Surface Duo.
According to a report by Latest Windows, The company has been working on the second Surface Duo device since late 2020 and plans to launch it in the latter part of 2021. The Surface Duo 2 will improve on some widely criticized shortcomings of the original Duo, including poor software and a poor camera experience.
Aside from this, the new surface device will likely feature updated hardware as well, including a faster chipset, better camera sensors, and even 5G support. However, the device software is expected to be the main focus.
Microsoft is reportedly hiring more people to work on the new Surface Duo 2
The report also suggests that Microsoft has been adding more engineers to the team working on the new Surface Duo 2. These include multiple job postings posted by the company. The company also seeks to offer a mobile user experience that brings “the best of Microsoft to the Android ecosystem,” according to the report.
Microsoft has also been contributing to work on the development of the “Dark Regions” API that “adds information about regions of the screen that have been obscured by other tasks or the system user interface.”
“The API will allow the developer to reflow the experience towards the visible regions. For example, a launcher can animate its bottom drawer so that it is not hidden to allow the user to launch another application, ”Microsoft said.
Furthermore, the report also suggests that the Surface Duo 2 is not the only product Microsoft hopes to launch in 2021. A new Surface Laptop 4 is also expected to launch in April and a Surface Pro 8 in October or November.
