The next giant monster mashup movie Godzilla Vs Kong from Legendary Pictures is ready to unveil a battle of truly epic proportions. While Godzilla has always been one of the greatest monsters in fiction, Kong has also experienced a massive increase in size to give him a chance to fight the fearsome lizard. A new poster shared by Kaiju News Outlet on Twitter has confirmed the size of the two giants in their upcoming film.
“New official promotional images for #GodzillaVsKong have confirmed that Godzilla will be 120 meters (394 feet) tall and Kong 102 meters (335 feet) in the next film.”
In Legendary’s Monsterverse, Godzilla’s first appearance in his 2014 solo film had the monster’s size set at a height of 355 feet. In the meantime, Kong: Skull Island had the mighty ape standing at 104 feet, though it was emphasized that the Kong that appeared in that movie was still a teenager, and had a lot more to do growing up.
So it’s clear that both giant monsters are the biggest they’ve ever been on. Godzilla vs. Kong, like a pair of boxing champions training to be in the best shape of their lives for the big title fight. Considering Godzilla has both the size advantage and his atomic breath, the odds are stacked against Kong, even with the use of the massive battle ax we’ve seen the giant ape wield in the trailer.
Of course, being outgunned and outgunned is a time-honored tradition in action movies, and the character at a disadvantage is often the hero of the narrative. Something similar seems to be happening in GvK, whose trailers have repeatedly emphasized that Godzilla has turned against humanity and began attacking cities, which is when Kong is brought in to subdue the wild beast. In an earlier interview, the film’s director, Adam Wingard, had compared Kong to a Clint Eastwood character.
“I see him not just as an animal. He’s the gunman without the shooting. He’s an overflowing action hero who’s not in a great place in his life. The way I always see my version of Kong … in Kong: Skull Island in the 70s is basically Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. In my version, this is Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven. He’s at the end of his rope. He’s not having a great time. action calls him, he’s always ready to step up and take it on! “
Since we know that Mechagodzilla will appear as well, it’s safe to say that both giant kaiju will at some point come together to face the new threat. Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry. The film hits theaters and at HBO Max on March 31.
