Could Regina be known as the mustard Canada’s capital?

Those at Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) certainly think so, and they may have a strong argument.

About 80 percent of Canada’s mustard seed is grown in Saskatchewan according to REAL. The province also supplies nearly 29 percent of the world’s mustard seed.

“Saskatchewan is the largest producer of mustard and the largest exporter of mustard in Canada,” said Kirk Westgard, REAL’s vice president of agriculture.

“Much of it is grown here, around Regina. You don’t have to go very far to see that farming occurs and is done in connection with a farmer.”

The City of Regina officially named August 3-7 “Spread the Mustard” week in celebration of the famous condiment.

“Anywhere in North America, in any stadium you go to, hot dogs and mustard are best friends and all that mustard comes from Saskatchewan,” Westgard said. When Westgard was asked if he preferred ketchup or mustard, he could only laugh.

To really cement the mustard capital, a new product called “Queen City Mustard” has been created and is currently available in Regina Ex.

“Queen City Mustard highlights how important the crop is to Saskatchewan’s economy and that it is a staple of exhibits everywhere,” REAL Executive Director Tim Reid said in a press release. “We want Regina to be the mustard capital of Canada!”

The 375 mL bottles retail for $5 and are available at the Queen City Ex merchandise stand in the QCX Marketplace located across the hall from the Viterra International Trade Center (VITC).

All proceeds from the Queen City Mustard will be donated to the Regina Food Bank.
