The 11 National Football Conference teams that have won a Super Bowl Championship – but who has the most titles?
Since its conception in 1967, the Super Bowl has crowned 55 champions. In those 55 years, only 20 of the 32 teams in the NFL have won the Super Bowl. 11 of these teams were from the NFC and 9 were from the AFC.
The record for most Super Bowl victories is held by two teams, both of which play in the AFC. These teams are the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In this article, we are going to talk you through what the NFC is and which teams in the NFC have won the Super Bowl the most times.
What is the NFC?
When the AFL and the NFL merged in 1960, they became what we know as the NFL today. A professional football tournament that consists of 8 divisions, playing in two conferences. Followed by the post-season playoffs which crown both the conference champions and NFL champions.
The two conferences that make up the NFL are called the AFC (American Football Conference) and the NFC (National Football Conference). The NFC is made up of 16 of the original NFL teams. The remaining 3 original NFL teams joined the 13 AFL teams and created the AFC.
Each conference has a North, South, East, and West Division. The winner of each division, the 2 runners-up, and 2 wild cards (8 teams in total) are entered into the playoffs each year. Each conference has its own playoff, the winner of the playoffs is crowned the conference champion.
The two conference champions then play each other to see who will be crowned NFL champions. This match is called the Super Bowl. There is always a team from the NFC and a team from the AFC playing in the Super Bowl.
