January 14, 2021 – Michael Jaworowski, Co-Founder and CEO of Notre, attributes his first encounter with Dunk as a catalyst for his career, interests, and community-driven approach to retail.
“I was at a hockey game for the home team in Grand Rapids and I saw a kid go up the escalator in crazy red and silver Nikes. They surprised me. When I got home, I jumped on the computer and started looking for red and silver Nike; I finally found out it was a Nike SB Dunk, ”says Jaworowski.
The discovery led an awakening. Jaworowski made his way onto the blogs and message boards of the time, leading to a job at Grand Rapid’s Premier Skate Shop (and mentoring its owners, Eric and Josh) and culminating in a maturation through the business. from sneakers and street clothes to the founding, almost a decade later, of Notre in Chicago.
“We wanted to be a place, a business in Chicago, that could lift up the people and organizations in the city and believe that we are making positive changes,” says Jaworowski.
The name of the store is translated from French to “our”. And within Notre there is a resounding commitment to cultivating connections and enabling a broader sense of ownership. “He definitely had an idea of the type of store he wanted to have,” says co-founder José Villanueva. “The community was always a big part.”
To make this happen, Jaworowski, Villanueva, co-owners Charlie and AJ Nordstrom, and the rest of the Notre team have applied ingrained diligence to a decidedly high-fashion, high-design platform. It is true to its unique spirit, a celebration of collaboration, curiosity, durability and work ethic. The store, for everyone involved, is a shared labor of love sustained by the belief that there are many worthwhile ways to do things beyond your own.
With the Nike Dunk, Jaworowski’s love of the silhouette meets Notre’s unabashed humility. A working Midwestern attitude represented through the store’s elevated aesthetic. “We were always inspired by work shirts and wanted to make sure we represented durable materials and triple-stitched details that we associate with rugged clothing and boots,” says Villanueva.
Subtle suede and leather details complement the clean colourways, enriching the story and adding texture. The medial Swoosh offers another element, making Notre’s Dunk “ours” – the joined hands that have become a hallmark of the brand.
the Nike x Notre Dunk launches exclusively in Notre on January 21 in tan and blue colourways. A second release of the blue colourway follows on January 23 on SNKRS.
