TORONTO, June 9, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – After a decisive judgment by Judge Edward M. Morgan recognized the unconstitutionality of the amendments to Bill 254 to the Ontario Election LawFord’s Conservative government has announced that it will revoke the legislature and invoke the clause nonetheless to overturn the ruling. The Ontario Federation of Labor is deeply concerned by Ford’s decision to silence his critics and trample on the constitutionally protected Ontarian Bill of Rights.
“The conservative Ford’s decision to invoke the nonetheless clause to reinstate a bill that has been declared unconstitutional is a desperate move by a government that has lost the trust of the people of Ontario,” said President Patty Coates. of the Ontario Federation of Labor. “This measure is an attempt to silence people who lost family members in disastrous long-term care conditions, families and education workers who called for safer classrooms, and workers who demanded paid sick days. It is a seizure of power, an abuse of power and it is unacceptable. We will not be silenced. “
Ontario Labor Federation warned the Ford government about the unconstitutionality of bill 254 and that the changes proposed by the government to the Ontario Election Law it would undermine electoral fairness. Bill 254 imposed arbitrary restrictions on the ability of organizations to interact with citizens on matters of public importance, such as paid sick days, long-term care repair, and classroom safety. While restricting third-party speech on issues of public importance, the bill privileged the wealthy by doubling the individual contribution limits.
“Ford’s decision to prevail over this shameless takeover with the unprecedented use of the clause nevertheless makes it clear that he cares more about protecting himself and his party than about electoral justice and democracy,” Coates said. “We will not let Ford silence his critics in a desperate attempt to cling to power.”
Coates added: “Ontarians are in shock. Are we still mourning last weekend’s attack in London, are we still dealing with the effects of the pandemic, are we still concerned about access to vaccines, and is Doug Ford focused on his re-election? It’s just disgusting. “
