Entering Monday, Jade Carey was the only member of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team without a medal to her name. By the end of the day, she had joined her teammates as medal winners and seized her golden opportunity.
Carey won a gold medal for Team USA while participating in the final of floor exercises. She was the only United States participant in the event after Simone Biles retired and managed to avoid stiff competition on the field. Six of the eight participants in the event scored 14 or higher on the court, but it was Carey’s 14,366 who led the way.
The 21-year-old gymnast’s victory was a good piece of redemption for her after she stumbled during the individual jump finals. Carey took a measured step into her first vault and was forced to protect herself from injury. She pulled off a basic Yurchenko crease and emerged unscathed.
Unfortunately, the stumble eliminated the chances of the vault and floor specialist earning medals during that event. She finished last in the field of eight women.

Carey’s mark of 14,366 was better than her qualifying score and pushed her ahead of Italy’s Vanessa Ferrari in her quest for gold. He was able to celebrate his sublime routine and victory with his father and coach, Brian Carey.
Ferrari managed to win the silver medal with a score of 14,200. It was an impressive effort from the 30-year-old, and her performance drew a standing ovation from those present at the Ariake Gymnastics Center.
Meanwhile, Mai Murakami of Japan and Angelina Melnikova of the ROC finished tied for third place. Both had the same difficulty and execution score and, as such, both received the bronze medal.
