At first glance, Saturday’s no-conference meeting between No. 16 Ole Miss and independent Liberty may not seem like a must-see TV. Fortunately, Sporting News is here to set the record straight.

The Rebels and Flames bout offers several captivating storylines, not least the quarterback battle between Ole Miss’s Matt Corral and Liberty’s Malik Willis. The Rebels’ gunslinger remains a firm favorite to win the Heisman Trophy in 2021, throwing 2,202 yards and 15 touchdowns at two interceptions and adding 538 running yards and 10 more scores.

Willis, meanwhile, has 1,986 yards passed and 21 touchdowns on six interceptions. Like Corral, Willis is also a talented runner, running for 697 yards and nine touchdowns.

This will also be Liberty manager Hugh Freeze’s first return to Oxford since his own resignation before the 2017 season. Freeze – who had beaten Alabama Nick Saban in both 2014 and ’15 – left the program after it was discovered he called an escort service on a university-issued phone. He has since enjoyed a resurgence at Liberty, taking the Flames to records of 8-5, 10-1 and 7-2 in 2019, ’20 and ’21 respectively.

It’s also worth watching how Ole Miss responds to an emotionally draining loss to Auburn, a match in which manager Lane Kiffin’s aggressive play calls three times resulted in turnovers on downs in Auburn’s red zone. The Rebels are almost certainly out of the game for the SEC West championship, but how they stand up for this match will go a long way in how this team ends the season.
