Pamela Hall OBE is a past president and vice president of the Conservative National Convention and now a candidate for president. She is currently president of the Conservative Women’s Organization of the Northwest (CWO).
For conservatives to win elections across the country, we need a strong, active, and vibrant volunteer party with the right professional support from CCHQ. I am seeking election as president of the Conservative National Convention, which is the link between being the voice of volunteer members, party leadership, and the CCHQ.
Voting opened earlier this week and I’ve been asked a lot: what does the National Convention do?
There are five volunteers elected as officers of the National Convention and these become members of the party board. Officers represent associations and their members on committees such as membership, finance, candidates, disciplinary procedures, and much more.
They also take responsibility for different regions and having been elected to positions for three years I have traveled the UK attending conferences, beach cleanups, campaign days, contest nights and other events to meet regional volunteers and teams and area to listen and understand their different needs. “Zoom” in the UK over the past year made it even easier to maintain those vital ties, although nothing beats meeting in person.
The roles of the Convention shape the functioning of the voluntary party and, in recent years, have sparked the revival of the CPF led by Andrew Sharpe. I further developed the Association Incentive Scheme as a way to connect volunteers with CCHQ, share ideas and support, as well as valuable rewards and competition. Convention officers also host events, training webinars, and most importantly, ensure that volunteer needs, concerns, and frustrations are expressed and heard within CCHQ and our party leadership.
The electorate for the National Convention is All Association Presidents, the Area and Regional President, and the National and Regional Officers of the CWO.
They have also asked me: what is the main problem in this election?
The only way to fully ensure that we rebuild better is to win the next general election and all other local elections before then. If elected, I will work with CCHQ and our members to support the right campaign resources in the right places, across the UK; I’ve already made progress working closely with area presidents and teams when, as vice president, we launched the original campaign. Managers Program in 2017. There is no doubt that we need more resources everywhere, and that is my priority.
And then the next question: what will you do?
It is vital that we gather more people in the party, the members must feel included, involved and appreciated and have the opportunity to use their skills; As a volunteer organization, we need all of you along with the following:
- The right government policies that align with our values and our manifesto, ensuring that the CPF is at the heart of future policy making.
- Adequate CCHQ support to campaign, against any opposition, across the country, involving and including local councilors, candidates, and associations as we develop messages and policies.
- More training for presidents and more teams to share ideas, advice and successes.
- Ongoing support for CWO, YC and CPF representation in all of our associations, regional and area officer teams.
I understand the structures of our party, with three years of experience in the National Convention. Having successfully served our party for the past 25 years, from president of the JC, association, area and regional officer to councilor and parliamentary candidate, I know our volunteers and know how to do things.
I’m on my feet because it’s an opportunity to do the right thing for the volunteer party, and Convention roles are absolutely the best roles in News Block! The vice president roles were not contested at all this year and that should change in the future: everyone should be aware of the different opportunities to get involved in News Block at all levels.
I have spoken at many CWO and Association Scheme events, encouraging others to participate, developing mentoring schemes across the country, and I would do much more of this to support more women, more youth, and everyone to seek opportunities in our party. .
If I am elected, the other board members and I, along with the regional and area teams, must be much more visible and accessible to the associations. Future Convention elections need a level playing field for the people to stand firm. These roles take a lot of time, shoe leather, and gasoline to get right, but it’s great to meet so many other people with a passion for News Block and help them find roles to thrive and enjoy.
Our party must do more to connect with all members and all voters if we are to continue to win and get our values and messages across the UK. If you have a vote, vote for me to improve those connections, enable more resources in the right places, so we can all have a chance to win together.
