When you reveal your thoughts and struggles to a therapist, you assume that the person you are speaking to has your best interests at heart, but they are just as human as you and are susceptible to the same dark desires. Based on the podcast of the same name, The psychiatrist next door tells the true story of Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf (Paul Rudd) as he slowly inserts himself into the life of his patient Martin “Marty” Markowitz (Will Ferrell). The official synopsis of The psychiatrist next door:
Inspired by true events, “The Shrink Next Door” details the strange relationship between the psychiatrist and the stars that Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf (played by Rudd) and his patient Martin “Marty” Markowitz (played by Ferrell). Throughout their relationship, the charming Ike slowly inserts himself into Marty’s life, even moving into Marty’s house in the Hamptons and persuading Marty to appoint him president of the family business. The series explores how a seemingly normal doctor-patient dynamic is transformed into an exploitative relationship full of manipulation, power grab and dysfunction at its best.
The eight-episode limited series also stars Kathryn Hahn as Phyllis, Marty’s younger sister, and Casey Wilson as Bonnie, Herschkopf’s Dr. Wife. Directed by Michael Showalter and Jesse Peretz, and based on a screenplay by Georgia Pritchett, the first three episodes of The psychiatrist next door will debut on Apple TV + in November 12, 2021, with new episodes every Friday.
