MANILA, Philippines – TNT held out to beat Terrafirma, 86-79, in their Philippine Cup debut on Saturday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Poy Erram scored a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds that went off with three blocks, while Jayson Castro scored 17 points for Tropang Giga.
“We just took our first step as a team today. We really are [starting] from scratch, ”said TNT head coach Chot Reyes.
“This is really our first experience, coming together to play as a team,” added Reyes. “So the little things, the feelings, the chemistry, it’s like we’re still far from it. We still have a lot to learn. “
Joshua Munzon, the first overall pick, struggled in his PBA debut with just six points on 3 of 15 shots from the field, but the Dyip still found himself with a shot down the stretch.
Terrafirma trailed as many as 22 points, but came close to five, 84-79, after a pair of free throws by Juami Tiongson with 2:10 to play.
The Dyip, however, was unable to do anything after that, as the Tropang Giga made the necessary stops to avoid the great collapse.
Aldrech Ramos had 17 points to lead Terrafirma, who shot just 32 percent from the field.
