In context: What do you do if you are a gaming company that is being sued for $ 200 million for copyright infringement? Well, if you are Roblox, try to sign as many tags involved in the lawsuit before a judge has a chance to rule. Roblox has signed two copyright agreements with major shareholders in the last month alone.
On Tuesday, Roblox Corporation Announced who signed a deal with Sony Music Entertainment to bring their recording artists into the game. The agreement envisages the collaboration of Roblox and Sony to create “innovative music experiences” for the community, such as virtual concerts.
Sony and Roblox have worked together in the past on projects such as the Lil Nas X virtual concert (below) last November and the Zara Larsson Launch Party, which took place in May. The deal appears to expand the work done with those artists for Sony. the entire talent stable. Last month, BMG Announced who had made a similar arrangement with the creator of the game.
Roblox is currently embroiled in a copyright lawsuit with the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA), which represents most record companies. The NMPA claims that Roblox allowed and profited from illegally uploaded or streamed content from various artists.
It appears that Roblox could be trying to deflate NMPA’s sails by signing deals with individual labels like Sony and BMG. It doesn’t legally get the company off the hook, as these deals come after the fact, but it could mitigate the blow by showing a good faith effort to curb the problem. Additionally, these rights holders are likely to withdraw from the NMPA lawsuit if they have a lucrative settlement.
The company had no further comment on what type of content the Roblox community will see or when it would have something together. However, it appeared that the copyrighted content was going to be company-produced rather than user-generated and he cautioned that copyright infringers would not be tolerated.
“For artists, labels and publishers, Roblox offers a unique and creative way to engage and attract millions of fans, as well as generate new sources of income through concerts and virtual launch parties, music integrated into the experience, worlds of persistent artists and virtual merchandise, “the company said. “Roblox respects the rights of all creators and uses advanced technology to filter all uploaded music. Roblox does not tolerate repeat offenders and responds promptly to all submitted DMCA requests.”
