SBSI’s president won the PRC’s 2021 Best Practitioner of the Year award for medical technology


Makati City, Manila – The Outstanding Professional of the Year award is the highest accolade given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in recognition of professionals with exemplary accomplishments in their respective fields. The criteria for This award is as follows: demonstrated competence of the highest degree, participated significantly in professional activities through professional organization, contributed significantly to the advancement of the profession, and served in professional social responsibility in socio- related.

Roberto G. Manaois, RMT, DBA, the current President and CEO of Scientific Biotech Specialties, Inc., (SBSI) won this award for the medical technology profession this year.

After more than two decades of serving as SBSI president, he has shown unparalleled expertise in his profession. He has managed to expand and build the company from four employees to more than 150 employees nationwide. According to Mr. Manaois, the company’s success comes from a strong partnership with its stakeholders. He said: “Not only do we provide solutions and help our customers improve their value chain and service offering for their patients, but we also help them innovate their clinical laboratory services.”

Mr. Manaois began his humble beginnings in the industry in 1992, after finishing his medical technology course at Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (FEU-NRMF). In the same year he obtained the license issued by the People’s Republic of China as a registered medical technologist (RMT). In 2010, the FEU-NRMF Alumni association awarded him the Most Outstanding Alumni award. In 2011, he earned his MBA-Regis Program at Ateneo de Manila University finishing with a silver medal academic excellence award. In 2019, he continued his studies earning his Doctor of Business Administration degree from San Beda University Graduate School of Business with an outstanding academic award graduating Summa Cum Laude. It also obtained the gold medal for the best dissertation in its lot and received the Visionary Prize of San Benedetto conferred by the rector of the university.

As early as 1994, he consistently contributed to his profession by conducting lectures and workshops in different chapters of the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET). His team pioneered the development of microbiology in clinical laboratories by introducing the bioMerieux Vitek system nationwide. This has contributed significantly to the practice of medical technology in the Philippines. In 2021, he was appointed chairman of PAMET’s Professional Development Committee, where he and his team develop learning programs for the growth and further professional development of medical technologists.

With his extensive knowledge gained over the years, he has been invited to share and teach at various universities as a professional in the industry. From 2013 to today, he has been a lecturer at the University of San Beda, where he was awarded as one of the most important lecturers of the graduate school of economics. He is also a lecturer at the Lyceum of the University of the Philippines Batangas, Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science. And in 2020, he started teaching at the University of Sto. Tomas, Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Medical Technologies. He also taught at the UST Graduate School in August 2021.

His academic contribution resulted in a total of four publications and two presentations of academic papers. Its recent publication was published in September 2020, in the Research Journal of San Beda University, Manila, entitled “Sustaining Performance through Competency Diagnosis and Improvement: An Insider Action Research”.

Serving others has always been part of Mr. Manaois’s passion in life. In 2016, he became a member of the board of directors and vice president of planning for the Great Lighthouse Foundation to date. He has shared resources to the community by consistently delivering health services through SBSI’s products, systems and people to the foundation to help the less fortunate, marginalized and disadvantaged members of our society. He is also one of the board members of the Far East Broadcasting Company, a sentinel who communicates the Good News to the nations.

His efforts to transform not only the company he built but above all the lives of the people he led were the most important aspect of his profession and life. Through his eternal determination and passion, he inspires many people, especially the next generation of leaders and aspiring medical technologists.
