Black widow Star Scarlett Johansson reflected on Natasha Romanoff’s sexualization in Iron Man 2 and how much has changed since then.
Iron Man 2 it feels like a distant memory for a number of reasons. The film was notably Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and her portrayal in that film is vastly different from what ultimately occurred in later installments.
You can easily attribute it to character development, but some of that has to do with timing as well. In an interview with Collider, Scarlett Johansson talked about Black Widow’s portrayal in Iron Man 2:
“Yes. He has definitely changed and I think part of that change probably made it, it’s difficult because I’m inside him, but probably a lot of that is also from me. I’ll be 35 years old, I’m a mom and my life is different. Obviously. It’s been 10 years and things have happened and I have a much more different and more evolved understanding of myself. As a woman, I’m in a different place in my life, you know. And I felt more forgiving of myself, as a woman, and no, sometimes probably not enough. I accept myself more, I think. All of that is related to that departure from the type of hypersexualization of this character and, I mean, you look back. Iron Man 2 And while it was a lot of fun and had a lot of great moments, the character is so sexualized, you know? You really talk about her like she’s a piece of something, like a possession or a thing or whatever, like a piece of ass, really. And Tony even refers to her as something like that at one point. What did he say? “
“I want some.” Yes, and at one point he calls her a piece of meat and maybe at that moment that really felt like a compliment. You know what I mean? Because my thinking was different. Maybe I even would have, you know, my own self esteem was probably measured against that kind of comment or like many young women you get into your own thing and understand your own self esteem. It is changing now. Now people, young girls, are receiving a much more positive message, but it has been incredible to be part of that change and to be able to come out of the other side and be part of that old story, but also of progress. Evolve. I think it’s pretty cool. “
