By the end of Matchday 12 we should have an idea if this Serie A season will be a two-man race for the title, or if there is a third contender who can enter the conversation. This last verdict will be issued by the latest edition of the Milanese derby.

With just 11 of the 38 games played so far, Napoli and Milan have jumped to the lead with an impressive streak of 10 wins in 11 games that has left many of their other hopes in the dust. Only Inter seem to have what it takes to challenge, but a defeat in Sunday’s derby against AC Milan would bring the deficit into double figures.

Naples (1st, 31 points) will face a tough home test against a Hellas Verona team (8th, 15 points) that is doing well after the change of coach in some matches of the season. The expectation is that the Neapolitans will go home with all three points, putting the two Milanese clubs under pressure within hours of the highly anticipated 2:45 pm derby on Sunday.

Although he was unable to garner many positive results in the UEFA Champions League, AC Milan (2nd, 31 points) showed exceptional form in the league, going 10V-0P-1D in his first 11 games. But Sunday’s derby against the reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan (3rd, 24 points) will prove to be the toughest test of the season so far. Inter will be desperate to win, but even a draw would probably be acceptable at the start of the season to maintain any hope of retaining the title.

The other big match of the weekend involves another Italian football rivalry: Juventus (9th, 15 points) hosts Fiorentina (7th, 18 points) with the opportunity to take the Viola in the standings. If the top three break away from the chasing group, the fight for fourth and last place in the UEFA Champions League will be intense and these two teams expect to be in contention with the likes of AS Roma, Lazio and Atalanta.
