Dr. Mark Hyman, an American physician, recently took to Instagram to explain how taking care of the gut can help fight and treat complex chronic diseases such as those related to the heart or diabetes.
“Our gut microbiome is probably the most important regulator of our health. There are 100 trillion microbes that send messages throughout the body, interacting with hormones, the immune system, brain chemistry and every other system in the body, “he explained.
The doctor shared six tips to maintain and heal your gut.
Eat whole, unprocessed and unrefined foods
Easier said than done given the lifestyle we all lead. But Dr. Hayman said “one of the best ways to maintain gut health is to cut out sugar, refined carbohydrates, and increase fiber for gut support.”
Eat high-fiber foods
The healthy bacteria in our gut feed on fiber. Be sure to add plenty of fruits, leafy vegetables, and nuts to your diet. Here are simple and smart ways to add fiber to your diet.
Fill 75 percent of your plate with vegetables, plant-based foods
It is evident how much our intestines like fibrous food. Eat feel-good foods like berries, blueberries, pomegranates, blueberries, and colorful foods to improve your gut health.
Eat good fats
“Fats like omega-3 fats and monounsaturated fats, like extra virgin olive oil, will help decrease inflammation, giving healthy gut insects a chance to thrive,” explained the doctor.
When you don’t get enough sleep or are stressed, it affects your gut. That is why it is suggested that you get an average of 7-8 hours sleep and also do stress-busting activities like yoga, meditation or therapy regularly. “Your intestinal flora is included in your thoughts and feelings,” said the doctor.
Dr. Hayman explained that when you exercise without many changes to your diet, it leads to the production of good bacteria that help produce a fatty acid known as butyrate. Additionally, he wrote: “Butyrate is a fatty acid that can prevent cancer, speed up metabolism, and reduce inflammation.”
