URI (upper respiratory tract infection) or ‘common cold’ is probably one of the most common infectious diseases in humans. It is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. There is no cure for the common cold, only its symptoms can be treated. A sore throat and runny nose are often the initial symptoms of a cold, followed by coughing and sneezing. These can also be accompanied by fever and headache. While there are more than 200 different types of viruses that cause the common cold, the most common one that causes the cold is the rhinovirus. Since there are so many types of viruses known to cause the common cold, and also because new viruses are constantly being developed, it is difficult for our bodies to build resistance against all of them. This is the reason why the recurrence of the common cold is so frequent.
Transmission:
The common cold virus is usually spread through aerosols or when you come into contact with an infected person. Although there is no such cure for the common cold, you can reduce the severity and treat these symptoms with the following home remedies for quick relief.
Honey and turmeric: Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric with 1 tablespoon of raw honey. Mix this concoction well and consume it 3-4 times a day. This combination is known to treat dry cough. You can also make turmeric tea by adding 1 teaspoon of turmeric to boiling water along with a pinch of black pepper powder. Mix it well and add a little lemon. And voila, your tea is ready!
Ginger Lemon Tea: Finely chop or grate the fresh ginger root. Pour some boiling water into a cup, add grated/chopped ginger. Let this mixture stay for a few minutes. You can strain the liquid or let the ginger stay in the tea. Season with a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice. You can even have this drink regularly to boost your immunity.
Gargling with salt water: A sore throat is very difficult to treat, sometimes it makes it very difficult to even swallow your own saliva. You can temporarily relieve a sore throat by gargling with warm salt water.
Turmeric milk: Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of milk, boil this mixture. Drink this mixture while it is hot. The presence of curcumin, which has antibiotic properties, makes turmeric one of the best ingredients to prevent and cure the symptoms of the common cold.
Camomile tea: Studies suggest that this fragrant tea contains compounds that help fight infections caused by the common cold virus.
A combination of a couple of these home remedies will surely help you get rid of a cold faster. Along with these home remedies, a nutritious and balanced diet comprising a sufficient amount of vegetables, fruits and a good amount of fluid intake is also very important, especially when you are sick, to maintain a good immune system.
Don’t forget to take care of yourself! 🙂
