Statement by Rahna Epting, MoveOn’s Executive Director on the GOP Filibuster of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act:

“We can have a democracy or we can have filibuster. But the Republicans prove we can’t have both. “

“Another day, another Republican obstruction of critical voting rights legislation. The Republican plan is clear: they want to systematically bring a wrecking ball to the cornerstone of our democracy, freedom to vote, in a sheer seizure of power.

“While their plan is clear as day and they make successful progress day after day, what is not at all clear is what the democratic plan is to stop it.

“For months, Joe Manchin has supported the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to chase Republican votes to end their filibuster. That plan failed. Miserably.

“Republicans have opened a multi-pronged war on our democracy: from attacking the right to vote, to daily lying about the latest elections, to false checks in states, to refusing to allow an impartial investigation into the largest attack on our homeland. from 11 September.

Given this fire of five alarms, it is high time the Democrats in Congress stopped pretending that the Republicans are a ruling party. And it is high time the Democrats in Congress stop pretending that Republicans care about our democracy or the right to vote.

“An arcane rule of the Senate is no more important than our fundamental right to vote. We can have a democracy or we can have filibuster. But the Republicans prove we can’t have both.

“The choice rests entirely with the Democrats. But every day they allow Republicans to stonewall, this bill is another day when our democracy and our freedom to vote are under attack. “
