Steve Mowry takes the competition one step further when he faces Rakim Cleveland at the Bellator 271.
A name that is making its way into Bellator rankings and slowly building a name for itself, Steve Mowry can continue his undefeated run and make another statement when he faces Rakim Cleveland at Bellator 271.
Over the summer, Mowry was preparing for a showdown with Marcelo Golm at Bellator 264, but an injury forced him out of the fight.
Bellator, however, told him to get ready for the first opportunity that would come when he healed.
“They told me ‘Ok, get ready for later in the fall.’ So I did, “Mowry said.” And before they even formally offered me my next opponent, they told me that the person I was going to eliminate, and then they said it was Rakim. So the first contact I had it was for Rakim and then really ever since, it’s been like the only name I’ve been totally involved with.
“Rakim has a different style than Marcelo, a very different style, but I still feel very confident in what I have done to prepare. But for me really, it’s just showing up at the gym. You know, fixing the little things that are different, the little nuances here and there. And the rest is really just hard work. Just show up, dig away and then, you know, come fight the night, I can’t wait to show them showing the process. “
Steve Mowry hopes Rakim Cleveland fights at Bellator 271 will lift him further into Bellator’s heavyweight ranks
Between his professional MMA debut in September 2016 and April 2018, Mowry impressed in his four fights in Titan FC, scoring four milestones, with none of the fights making it into round three.
This led to him signing with Bellator in 2018, where he continued to increase his shares. His promotion run began with submission wins over Ben Moa, Darion Abbey and Gokhan Saricam before finishing back-to-back against Shawn Teed and Shaun Asher – the latter arriving in just 55 seconds after some devastating leg kicks and a big knee at Bellator 257 in April.
The win over Asher was particularly good for Mowry considering that when he fought against Teed, he was doing it without his coaches, who were in Abu Dhabi at the time.
“Being in my corner made me feel really good. It was really nice to give them the juice, “said Mowry.” They gave us a squeeze and it was nice to show them the fruits of their labor too. “
Now, having worked his way through other young fighters and a 13-4-1 Shaun Asher, Mowry has a chance to challenge himself against a highly experienced pro in Cleveland, another Titan FC alumni who also has experience in the PFL and in Victory FC.
Cleveland most recently scored a first-round knockout of Kelvin Fitial at B2 Fighting Series 132 in August to claim the vacant heavyweight title of the promotion.
“[Rakim is] very dynamic. He’s very athletic, ”Mowry said.“ He has powerful shots. You know, he’s definitely shown the prowess of someone he’s been in, you know, anyway a lot of almost 40 fights now. But I can’t wait to face the challenge “.
Bellator 271 will be captained by Cristiane Justino (aka Cris Cyborg) who will defend Bellator’s women’s featherweight championship against Sinead Kavanagh.
