During Tesla’sOn Thursday, CEO Elon Musk reiterated . It has 1,020 horsepower, can accelerate to 60 mph in just 2 seconds, and will top out at 200 mph. Most importantly, you will be able to experience that performance beyond the ridiculous time and time again.
That’s key news, as Tesla’s EVs have long been criticized for their notable drop in performance. But Musk says that won’t be a problem with plaid. The updated Model S has a new heat pump and the radiator is twice the size. “You can actually do consecutive races from 0 to 60, hit the track, just drag your ass,” Musk said. “This car can do it over and over again and it doesn’t take your breath away.”
As you can see from the Tesla presentation slide above, compared to previous Model S variants, the Plaid not only offers more power, it holds it for longer.
Plus, that new heat pump gives the Model S a 30% improvement in the cold weather range and requires 50% less energy to heat the cab in freezing conditions. “You’ll see very little degradation in cold weather,” said Musk, which is an incredibly important factor for the habitability of electric vehicles.
Performance is obviously a key selling point for the $ 131,100 Model S Plaid (including destination), so this improved thermodynamics is a welcome change. Musk even suggests that Tesla could put the plaid to the test under extreme performance conditions. “I think we have to take this back maybe to the Nurburgring,” he said. “Look what happens.”
