The 2023 Acura Integra prototype revives the sedan body, aims for past glory

Acura unveiled its new Integra prototype at an event in Los Angeles and the new five-door hatchback is intended to signal the return of affordable performance to the Acura range.

Some details that we had previously guessed have been confirmed, starting with the powertrain. Under the hood will be a 1.5-liter turbo-4 (the first factory turbo engine for an Integra) which is likely based on the one used in the Honda Civic / Civic Si. Acura hasn’t given a power figure, but the version in 2022 Civic It makes 200 hp. The only other mechanical details mentioned were an available limited slip differential and a 6-speed manual gearbox, combining the Civic Si also. An automatic will certainly be offered and we hope it will be the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic currently found in the ILX and TLX, rather than the CVT that populates the other Civic variants.

The prototype’s Indy Yellow Pearl paint matches the color available for the NSX supercar. Acura says this color was chosen for the prototype as a tribute to the Phoenix Yellow worn by the past Integra Type R. Color is the only thing the two cars share in terms of style; the new Integra encompasses modern Acura, for better or for worse.

The fastback profile takes on a more modern design with a lower tail than the integra of the past. The highest point of the roof sits at the top of the windshield and the roof line flows back from there to culminate in a rear lip spoiler. The large Integra decals adorning the sides at first look childish, but the car’s profile can look too simple without them, so I don’t mind their inclusion. Acura has not said if they will appear on the production car. The Integra name is also stamped on both the front and rear bumpers, the same way it was on the old car.

Just like my figure from the 90s, the Integra has gotten noticeably bigger. Previous generations of the Integra at their debut were much smaller than the new car. In person, the prototype looks larger than the Civic sedan, and the tapered roofline made me think of the Accord when I first saw it. Hopefully this doesn’t translate into a heavier feeling behind the wheel.

Acura says the new Integra will start at around $ 30,000 and has been referred to multiple times as “the new door” for the Acura brand. It is not yet confirmed that the ILX will not continue beyond 2022, but it does not appear to be right for the sedan. That would raise the entry price for Acura, the ILX starts in the mid-range of $ 20,000. The Integra will be built alongside the TLX in Marysville, Ohio, and is expected to hit dealerships next year as a 2023 model.

We will update this report with more information as the Integra production car becomes available.
