Wilder was already well known in the industry before taking on the role of Willy Wonka, appearing in films such as Bonnie and clyde (1967) and The producers (1967).
He went on to have an illustrious career after the cult classic, starring in Hot saddles (1974), Young frankenstein (1974) and Silver streak (1976), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in 1977.
He also experienced success on the small screen with roles in Something wilder other Will and grace.
Wilder also published a few books in his lifetime, including his 2005 memoirs, Kiss me like a stranger: my search for love and art.
The veteran star died in 2016 after experiencing complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Hey 83.
Wilder was married four times and is survived by his fourth wife, Karen Boyer.
