The restomod Hyundai Grandeur EV dresses the design of the 80s with the pixel lighting of the Ioniq models

Hyundai recently unveiled a restomod EV of its 1980s flagship Grandeur sedan, incorporating design elements from upcoming Ioniq electric models.

Launched in 1986, the Grandeur was Hyundai’s first attempt at a flagship luxury sedan, setting the stage for today’s Genesis luxury marque.

The formal-looking sedan retains most of its vintage design cues and highlights the Parametric Pixel approach that was teased in the Seven SUV concept for the 2021 Los Angeles auto show, which debuts next week. Seven will preview an Ioniq 7 production model set to debut in 2024.

The same approach is seen in some of the details of the next Ioniq 6 (based on the Hyundai Prophecy Concept), albeit in a much more curvy shape.

The restomod Grandeur EV also gets a reworked interior with a modern digital display, as well as a smaller vertical touchscreen that appears to take the place of most analog controls. Another modern twist is ambient lighting in a bronze color chosen to refer to vintage audio equipment, according to Hyundai.

This is actually the second concept restomod Hyundai Heritage Series EV. Earlier this year, Hyundai unveiled a Pony Heritage Series concept, with similar updates to the Grandeur Heritage Series.

That means an electric powertrain, Ioniq-style pixel lighting, and a full-screen interior. The screens appear to have the same graphics as the touchscreens on current Hyundai models, including vacuum tubes for radio stations, which feel particularly appropriate for this retro concept.

Introduced in 1975, the original Hyundai Pony sedan was the automaker’s first in-house developed car. It also served as inspiration for the design of the Hyundai 45 concept, which in turn set the direction for production Ioniq 5 crossover scheduled for launch in 2022.
