Paris Saint-Germain star Gianluigi Donnarumma confessed that while his battle for the starting spot with Keylor Navas doesn’t affect his performance, it hurts him to be on the bench. The Euro 2020 winner struggled to consistently get playing time for his new team, with just 7 appearances.
With an average of 30 league appearances since making his debut for AC Milan in the 2015/16 season, many expected the trend to continue for Gianluigi Donnarumma at Paris Saint-Germain. This was especially after the goalkeeper’s impressive performance at Euro 2020, where he won the tournament and also the award for best goalkeeper. However, the move to Paris hasn’t worked out for either side yet, with the 22-year-old a rotation option so far.
The Italian shared the tasks of the goalkeepers with Keylor Navas and has therefore only made seven appearances in all competitions for the club. This includes five in the Ligue 1 and two in the Champions League but Donnarumma admitted that despite the rotation it had no “effect” on his performances. The Italian also added that things have not been easy for him and he hopes that the situation will change soon.
“It does not affect my performance, but it disturbs me. It is not easy, because I was used to always starting and sometimes it hurts to be on the bench. But I am sure that the situation will be resolved,” said Donnarumma, reported goal.
