So who are the best horse trainers in the world, and what makes them stand out?
1.Aidan O’Brien – Irish
Aidan O’Brien is the best horse trainer of our time. He is a commanding force not just in Ireland, but around the world. In 2017, O’Brien really started to make a name for himself when he set a world record. This record hadn’t been beaten in over 14 years! O’Brien managed to train 26 group 1 horses to be winners in just 1 calendar year.
The previous world record of 25 group 1 winners was created by Bobby Frankel in 2003.
But there is more to O’Brien than a one year world record. With access to the best bloodlines from Coolmore, O’Brien is able to find rare talent more often than most trainers. Adding in his own trainer’s skills, means that these steeds of raw potential are easily turned into first-class racehorses!
In 1996, O’Brien prepared and trained horses for Coolmore, each of whom had turned into champions. These horses were; Alexandrova, Camelot, Hawk Wing, High Chaparral, Dylan Thomas, Duke of Marmalade, Henrythenavigator, Galileo, Rock of Gibraltar, Johnnesburg, Years, George Washington, Mastercraftsman, Rip Van Winkle and Fame and Glory!
Looking further back into his history. O’Brien was the champion National Hunt trainer in Ireland, and held that title for 5 successive seasons in the 90s.
If you are thinking that all these achievements are only great things of the past, then let us remind you! Since 1999, O’Brien has earnt the title of “champion flat racing trainer”. This is a title he still holds to this day!
2.Bob Baffert – American
Bob Baffert’s achievements are more recent than Aidan O’Brien, having trained American Pharoah and Justify to Triple Crown. These beauties triumphed against the competition in 2015 and 2018.
However, most racing fanatics will recognize the name Bob Baffert from his previous Kentucky Derby races. It was in this derby that Baffert produced incredible wins throughout the season. 5 were in the Kentucky Derbies, 7 in the Preakness Stakes, 3 in the Belmont Stakes, and 3 in the Kentucky Oaks!
All of these wins were the “sprinkle on top” for his 15 Breeder’s Cup and 3 Dubai World Cups!
Bob Baffert is recognized for a reason, and his horses keep getting gold!
3.Team Godolphin – Dubai, Britain, and Australia
So this entry is a team of trainers instead of a single outstanding trainer, but our sentiment still counts. If you want to find a surefire win by checking out trainers and their history, don’t be put off by this group effort!
Team Godolphin has three trainers, but their top two are Saeed bin Suroor and Charlie Appleby. James Cummings is seen as royalty in Australian racing, but his training has yet to be proven.
Whenever Team Godolphin joins in a race, you can be sure that they will achieve their goal. It may take them time, and it may cost a lot of money, but when they have put their hat into the ring, you better watch out!
In 2018, the team won the Melbourne Cup, and this happened to be when Bob Baffert temporarily joined their establishment. As Godolphin grows in ability, they will enter into more competitions, waiting and saving their energy for the big fight.
If you see their name on a listing, watch out.
4. John Gosden – English
John Gosden may be a surprising entry onto our list of best horse trainers because the best often have a history of being a former jockey. Gosden is one of the few who never played that role. Despite this lack of specific jockey knowledge, Gosden is one of the best trainers in the world!
Almost every race that Gosden’s horses have entered has won. They are a thriving collection of winners or near misses. His current top dog is Enable. She is a strong mare who has the title “Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe Winner ” under her belt.
5.Andre Fabre – French
Andre Fabre is a fierce French trainer! Since 1987 he has won 24 French titles! 21 of them were year after year. He has also won the Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe 7 times. The Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe is the biggest race in France, and so this remarkable feat has impressed many of his rivals and friends!
