WASHINGTON (AP) – The Pentagon on Monday accused Iran of “unsafe and unprofessional” conduct of a naval helicopter which it said flew about 25 meters from a US Navy ship and did so three times in the Gulf of Oman.
Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said the Iranian helicopter surrounded the USS Essex, an amphibious assault ship, three times and at one point flew to a depth of 10 feet from the water surface. He said the November 11 incident had no effect on Essex operations.
“Without going into detail, the Essex crew took the appropriate force protection measures they deemed necessary and acted in accordance with international law,” Kirby said.
The United States Navy has periodically reported what it calls unsafe and unprofessional encounters with Iranian naval forces in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
