Going in horses per liter, the Toyota GR Yaris has one of the most powerful production engines currently on the market. Its 1.6-liter in-line turbo is rated at a whopping 268 horsepower straight from the factory. While it looks incredibly tight, it feels like the engine still has a lot more on the table, even with mostly stock interiors.
Motive Garage and Powertune Australia wanted to see how far they could push the GR Yaris’s tiny three-cylinder before opening it to swap things like cams, pistons and connecting rods, upgrading everything from the turbo to the MAF sensor to the fuel system. The only real upgrade mechanical inside the engine are the new valve springs. With everything to the max, the team was able to squeeze an incredible 473 hp to the wheels on a hub test stand.
That number makes it the most powerful GR Yaris on the planet (which we know of, anyway). Tuners have yet to test the car on the drag track, but expect it to crunch the quarter-mile in the 10-second span and eclipse a trap speed of 130 mph.
