Apple’s WWDC 2021 Keynote announcements have come and gone, and the latest version of our favorite big screen operating system is now available to developers in beta. While they didn’t get much love from Keynote, these Apple TV features change the way we control our televisions, share experiences with others, and allow us to stay on top of events inside and outside the home. Here are three tvOS 15 features that you may have missed from this year’s dub-dub.

Apple occasionally offers updates for iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as previews closed to developers or public betas. While the beta versions contain new features, they also contain pre-launch bugs that can prevent normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not designed for everyday use on a primary device. This is why we highly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development and using public beta versions with caution. If it depends on your devices, wait for the final release.

SharePlay controls

Apple spent a lot of time highlighting new social features across all of its devices during the presentation, with most of the time focusing on SharePlay. If you missed it, SharePlay lets you share your experience of listening to music or binge-watching with others by syncing everyone’s playback via FaceTime.

However, what Apple didn’t talk about was how to set up SharePlay on the Apple TV, as it lacks a FaceTime app. However, in typical Apple fashion, using SharePlay is relatively straightforward and fairly automatic thanks to some behind-the-scenes magic. .

During a FaceTime call, you can start the SharePlay experience by clicking a new button located below the Now Ringing widget in Control Center. Your Apple TV will automatically detect an active FaceTime call and you can start the session immediately so you don’t have to worry about typing in long email addresses with the Siri Remote.

HomeKit enhancements

While the biggest news from tvOS related to HomeKit focused on a sleek new grid view of multiple cameras and nearby accessory controls, tvOS 15 introduces a new way to interact with security accessories. After delving into the beta version of tvOS 15, I discovered additional HomeKit activity notification settings that include updates not only to HomeKit cameras, but also to other security accessories such as door locks and garage doors.

Now when one of your doors is unlocked, when your garage door is opened, or when a camera detects motion, tvOS 15 will display a notification in the upper right corner of your TV screen. When camera activity occurs, your HomeKit camera’s live feed will appear in a convenient picture-in-picture overlay that sits on top of whatever is on your screen at the moment. If you want to see additional details, you can jump directly to a full-screen live view with just one click of the Siri Remote.

While you may think these notifications would distract you, having them on your TV means you won’t have to look away from the on-screen action only to find that your neighbor’s kid decided to take a walk in your yard. . Of course, you can also customize your notification preferences, and you can take advantage of HomeKit’s Safe Video options that can filter out annoying pet and vehicle notifications.

Remote control renewed

Technically this is more of an iOS feature, but Apple has introduced a revamped Apple TV remote app for Control Center in the latest versions of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. However, since I rely on the Remote Control Center control more than on the current Siri Remote, the changes are certainly noteworthy.

The new remote control app now includes additional buttons for various standard TV functions. These include controls to change the channel on your TV, access settings, mute the volume, and toggle the power. The remote also changes the button labels and layout of the Apple TV, with a large back button now highlighted in the center of the screen below the touch area. The back button replaces the menu button found on older Apple TV remotes, keeping everything consistent with the latest Apple TV 4K hardware.
