Once again, it’s USA vs. Mexico in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup final, which crowns the best national team from the North America, Central America and the Caribbean region. Mexico is the defending champion after beating the United States in the 2019 final by a narrow score of 1-0.
It’s usually tight and heated when these two archrivals square off – the 2021 Nations League final in June was pure chaos. Mexico will seek revenge for that loss and with a roster much closer to that of the alternate squad of the US men’s team, El Tri is the favorite to claim back-to-back Gold Cup wins.
As powerhouses in the region, the US and Mexico have won nearly every Gold Cup since 1991: Mexico won it eight times and the US six times, most recently in 2017. Canada was the only other nation to lift The throphy. during a memorable Cinderella run in 2000.
Sporting News will follow the 2021 Gold Cup final as it happens, providing live score updates, commentary and highlights as they arrive from a sold-out Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas:
USMNT vs. Mexico Live
(All the eastern time)
26 min .: What a mistake by Paul Arriola. He was left alone against the goalkeeper in the area after Sebastián Lletget snatched the ball from Edson Álvarez. Great missed opportunity for the United States, wide right.
21 min .: Funes Mori falls back into the box! This time it was a battle for the ball against Miles Robinson, who had his arms extended, but not pushing, just protecting the ball. And the referee has a talk with Funes Mori.
18 min .: Mexico left-handed Gallardo with a ball that goes through the goal for the right-back of Mexico, who wins a corner. The header on the set piece is to the right of goalkeeper Matt Turner.
15 min .: After a long delay, Williamson is back on the field and fans start the “Ole” on every Mexico pass. I’m pretty sure your team needs to be in the lead before you can do that.
12 min .: American midfielder Eryk Williamson on the ground receiving treatment after receiving a ball to the head.
11 min .: In the following corner, the American goalkeeper Turner dived after a header from Funes Mori.
11 min .: Wow. That looked like a penalty kick that should have been awarded to Mexico. George Bello with his arm high in an unnatural position to block a Mexico cross. Officials don’t call it! America got away with one there.
10 minutes.: It’s been 10 minutes and the USMNT has had some giveaways in midfield, but the Americans have kept up. As the minutes go by, the United States seems to be falling deeper with each attack.
2nd min .: Mexico fans wanted a penalty for Rogelio Funes Mori to fall in the area in a challenge from goalkeeper Matt Turner. But that was a dive. Great no-call from ref.
1st min .: It is an opportunity. USMNT pressing right outside the gates.

Starting lineups for the United States vs. Mexico
Lots of changes to the USMNT lineup against Mexico: Gyasi Zardes wins title over Daryl Dike; backs Reggie Cannon and George Bello replace Shaq Moore and Sam Vines; and Eryk Williamson is in the starting eleven over Gianluca Busio in midfield.
On the Mexico side, Tata Martino bet on central defender Nestor Araujo over Carlos Salcedo, probably because the latter can be prone to making a mistake or a red card. The last thing Mexico wants to do is give the United States any advantage. Additionally, Martino preferred Jonathan Dos Santos over Erick Gutiérrez in midfield, along with central midfield accessories Héctor Herrera and Edson Álvarez. Dos Santos started the last two games against Canada and Honduras.
