The University of Virginia Center for Policy in partnership with the Miller Center, the Weldon Cooper Center / Sorensen Institute, the Initiative for Democracy and the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy have selected 50 students for the second annual program of 22nd Century Scholars scholarships to be launched. July 1 and continue until August 6.
The 22nd Century Scholars (open to sophomores, juniors and seniors at UVA and UVA Wise) were selected by application and will participate in a multifaceted summer internship with participating partners. The program is designed to be an immersive learning opportunity where students gain work experience in the public sector; participate in planning public events; generate political and historical research; help with the production of television documentaries; and receive personalized professional advice through the UVA Career Center. Additionally, new to the program this year, all Fellows will participate in the Center for Politics Global Perspectives on Democracy program and engage in real-time international diplomacy by serving as “host peers” for a sponsored program. by the US State Department student delegation to Iraq during the last two weeks of the program.
Each fellow will receive a stipend of $ 2,000 as part of the program and will work individually and collectively on some of the most important public sector issues facing the country and the world today. At the beginning of the program, each student will also be paired with alumni from the University, including CBS News. Take on the nation Moderator Margaret Brennan, broadcaster and former UVA and NFL football player Tiki Barber, former US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Director Chris Krebs and many others who will serve as professional mentors for students during the five weeks of internship and then monthly for the next year.
“The challenges facing our next generation of public servants are incredibly daunting: the rise of autocracy around the world, extremism, climate change, technological risks, and scarce resources. I am excited to work with future leaders who will step up to meet these challenges and protect our democracy, ”said Krebs.
Roark Corson, a 22nd century intern from last summer, has been mentored by Erik Hirsch, Hamilton Lane vice president and private equity industry expert. “After the internship, I kept up with my mentor and he has been an incredible asset. He helped me with my resume, cover letters, interview skills, and other job-related areas. We share an interest in News Block and our discussions of world events are always fascinating and enjoyable. The mentoring aspect of the 22nd Century Academic Program is absolutely invaluable, ”Corson said. Corson joined the US State Department for an internship at the Wuhan Consulate in China this summer.
