The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Thursday that Virat Kohli has decided to step down as captain of the T20I team following the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2021. Kohli will continue to lead the team in the ODI test and format. .

Kohli will continue to be available for selection for the T20 format after the upcoming T20 World Cup, which is hosted by the BCCI in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The T20 World Cup starts on 17 October and the final will be played on 14 November. Virat Kohli will lead the team in the T20 World Cup with Mahendra Singh Dhoni as a mentor of the team.

Virat Kohli assumed the captaincy of the limited number players in January 2017 from MS Dhoni. Kohli led India in 45 T20I games of which India won 27 games and lost 14.

Announcing the move, Team India captain Virat Kohli said: “I was lucky enough to represent not only India but also lead the Indian cricket team to the best of my ability. I thank everyone who supported me on my journey as captain of the Indian cricket team. I couldn’t have done it without them: the guys, the support staff, the selection committee, my coaches and all the Indians who prayed for us to win. “

“Understanding the workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the past 8-9 years playing in all 3 formats and captaining regularly for the past 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully prepared to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket. I gave my all to the team during my time as T20 captain and will continue to do so for the T20 team as a hitter going forward. “ He added.

“Of course, coming to this decision took a long time. After much reflection and discussion with my loved ones, Ravi bhai and also Rohit who have been an essential part of the management team, I have decided to step down as T20 captain after this T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman in October. I also talked about it with the secretary Mr Jay Shah and the president of the BCCI Mr Sourav Ganguly along with all the recruiters. I will continue to serve Indian Cricket and Indian Team to the best of my ability “, he added further.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said: “Virat was a real asset to Indian cricket and drove with ease. He is one of the most successful captains in all formats. The decision was made with the future roadmap in mind. We thank Virat for his outstanding performance as Captain T20I. We wish him all the best for the next World Cup and beyond and we hope he continues to score many points for India. “

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said: “We have a clear timetable for Team India. Considering the workloads and ensuring a smooth transition, Virat Kohli has decided to step down as Captain T20I following the upcoming World Cup. I have been in discussions with Virat and the management team for the past six months and the decision has been considered. Virat will continue to contribute as a player and as a senior member of the team to shape the future course of Indian cricket. “
