Why VAR overturned referee Felix Zwayer’s decision and awarded a penalty to Harry Kane in the Euro semi-final between England and the Netherlands

Must Read

It’s safe to say that the match between England and the Netherlands lived up to the expectations of a UEFA EURO semi-final. Within 7 minutes, Dutch star Xavi Simmons opened the scoring, but England’s Harry Kane quickly responded with a penalty goal. However, like many other penalties, this one also generated some controversy.

Initially, referee Felix Zwayer did not award the penalty. However, a few seconds later, the VAR intervened and the penalty was awarded. So why did this happen? To understand why this happened, let’s review the rules.

Why was Harry Kane awarded the penalty?

Following the initial clash between Harry Kane and Denzel Dumfries, the striker fell to the ground clutching his foot. VAR was then consulted after seeing the extent of Kane’s pain. This led to Felix Zwayer going to the video screen to check the collision himself.

Replays unequivocally revealed that Dumfries made a late challenge and caught Kane’s foot with a high boot, without making contact with the ball. This consequently led to the referee awarding England the penalty which Harry Kane buried into the bottom left corner.
