Daryl Mitchell starred with a well-crafted 72 * to fuel New Zealand with a five wicket win over England in the first 2021 T20 World Cup semi-final in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. New Zealand will play the third consecutive final of the ICC tournament, following the 2019 World Cup and the 2021 World Test Championships.

Daryl Mitchell scored four fours and as many sixs during his unbeaten 47-ball blitz, helping New Zealand ace in the chase with five wickets and a spare over. The right hander added 82 over 66 with Devon Conway (46) and 40 over 17 with Jimmy Neesham (27 out of 11), after Chris Woakes fired the expert Martin Guptill (4) and Kane Williamson (5) leave New Zealand 13/2 in the fourth over. It was Neesham who turned the tide in the finals, scoring a four and a six in a timely blitz.

Liam Livingstone was England’s unlikely star with the ball, finishing 2/22 from four overs, including a crucial 16th in which he removed a well-set Conway and suffered only three.

The win secured New Zealand’s third straight ICC tournament final after finishing second in the 2019 World Cup final and winning the World Test Championship earlier this year.

The second semi-final will be played between Pakistan and Australia in Dubai on Thursday 11 November and the winner will meet New Zealand in the final of the tournament on Sunday at the same venue.
