In a move that should surprise no one (except for the time taken), the Republican Party of Wyoming has decided it will no longer recognize Rep Liz Cheney (R-Wyo) as a Republican.
The State party passed the resolution on Saturday by a margin of 31-29.
From Casper Star Tribune:
“Mentioned earlier in the censorship resolution, Representative Liz Cheney ‘voted in favor of impeachment with no quantifiable evidence of serious crimes or misdemeanors,” the resolution stated. “So far, no quantifiable and / or undisputed evidence has been offered to Representative Liz Cheney to defend her questionable decision.”
Cheney spokesman Jeremy Adler said so The hill the move was “ridiculous”.
“It is ridiculous to suggest that Liz is anything but a committed Conservative Republican. It is bound by its oath to the Constitution. Unfortunately, some of the Wyoming GOP leadership has abandoned that fundamental principle and instead allowed itself to be harbored by the lies of a dangerous and irrational man, ”Jeremy Adler, a spokesperson for Cheney, said in a statement to The Hill on Monday.
Cheney’s outspoken opposition to Donald Trump, his constituents, and his vote for Trump’s impeachment in the Capitol Hill riots last January led many Republicans and Conservatives to question who she presumes represents.
Cheney is facing four main challenges in the next election cycle. One of the main opponents, Harriet Hageman, told the Star Tribune that the move was appropriate considering Cheney’s break with the party state.
“It’s appropriate because Liz Cheney stopped recognizing what Wyomingites are interested in a long time ago. When he launched his war on President Trump, he completely broke with where we are as a state, ”Hageman said in a statement.
The Wyoming GOP resolution also asked Republicans in Congress to “remove her immediately” from all committee posts and “accelerate her seamless exodus from the Republican Party.”
