It has been an expensive day for the Detroit Lions front office after signing star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Penei Sewell to massive contract extensions that made each one the highest-paid players at their respective positions in the NFL.

Next in line to get paid is quarterback Jared Goff, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided an update on that front after the St. Brown and Sewell extensions left fans wondering what is next for the Lions.

Schefter posted on X that no deal is “imminent” for Goff despite the other stars getting paid, noting that “the Lions and Goff have spoken about a new deal this offseason, but no deal is close at this time.”

Goff is in the final year of a 4-year, $134 million extension he signed with the Los Angeles Rams and has a $32.3 million cap hit this coming year.

It’s too early to get concerned about Goff’s contract status, as it’s a positive sign that Schefter noted the two parties have had discussions already.

Given how much money the team gave Sewell and St. Brown, it feels unlikely they’d be willing to break the bank for them but not Goff, especially after how well the team has done since Goff came to town and took over for Matthew Stafford.

Goff was seen by many to be a bridge quarterback when he was acquired by the Lions, but he has proven to be anything but that.

He had a great regular season and was great in the playoffs as well, and everything we have heard indicates he is the guy in Detroit.

We’ll see what kind of bag he gets.
