The Best Movies Leaving Hulu This Month

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016)

While Hulu is great for catching all of the hottest and most popular shows and movies, it is also a great place to watch some excellent movies that went under the radar. Despite bombing at the box office upon its release, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is one of the best comedies of the 21st century. Coming from the minds behind Lonely Island, the mockumentary stars Andy Samberg as a vain and clueless former boy band member embarking on his own solo career.

Popstar spoof musicians of all kinds, from Macklemore to Justin Bieber to U2, in hilarious fashion. As with Lonely Island’s Digital Shorts on Saturday Night Livethere are also so many great spoof songs in the movie that are not only funny but also catchy. The movie is packed with celebrity cameos including Emma Stone, Justin Timberlake, and Weird Al Yankovic. It is a sorely underrated comedy that Hulu users should seek out before it leaves the platform on May 15.

Elvis (2022)

Now that Austin Butler is becoming one of the hottest actors in Hollywood, it is a good time to look back on the movie that served as his big breakthrough before it leaves Hulu on May 30. Elvis is the true story of Elvis Presley, one of the most iconic and celebrated names in music history. Butler takes on the daunting role backed by Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, the man who guided and manipulated Elvis’ career to his own liking.

Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the hit movie is as much of a superhero story as it is a biopic with the filmmaker taking a larger-than-life approach to examining this amazing career. Butler earned an Oscar nomination for his transformative performance while the movie itself was nominated for Best Picture. While it doesn’t break new ground in terms of biopic storytelling, it is an entertaining ride that became a crowd-pleasing hit.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

The Big Lebowski is one of the best Coen Brothers movies in their long career of great movies and it is also one of the funniest movies of all time, making it a must-watch before it leaves Hulu on May 31. Jeff Bridges stars as The Dude, a hippie living in early 90s America who spends his days smoking weed and bowling with his friends. However, he is drawn into a complicated conspiracy when he is mistaken for a rich and powerful man who shares his name.

Bridges delivers a comedic tour de force performance in the lead role…

The Coen Brothers brilliantly dissect the noir detective genre by having the character investigating the mystery be completely oblivious and unmotivated. Bridges delivers a comedic tour de force performance in the lead role while being backed by an amazing supporting cast that includes Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and John Turturro. However, it is John Goodman who steals the show as The Dude’s aggressive and dramatic Vietnam veteran best friend, Walter.

Dune (2021)

With Dune leaving Hulu on May 31it marks what is likely the biggest title being removed this month. With Dune: Part Two‘s success helping to make this one of the biggest sci-fi franchises around, the first movie is essential for looking back on to get the full scope and story of Denis Villeneuve’s two-part epic. The movie is an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s massively influential novel that inspired sci-fi blockbusters like Star Wars.

Timothée Chalamet steps into the role of Paul Atreides, the son of a powerful duke who is given control of the hostile but valuable planet of Arrakis only to learn their family has been pulled into an intergalactic conspiracy. The movie is a fantastic opening chapter for the franchise with Villeneuve achieving the complex world-building effectively and staging mesmerizing set pieces.

The Ocean’s Trilogy (2001-2007)

All three movies in the Ocean‘s trilogy will be leaving Hulu on May 31. While the original Ocean’s 11 movie was a fairly forgettable romp featuring the Rat Pack, the remake elevated the story with a fun, clever, and even more star-studded ride. George Clooney leads the ensemble as Danny Ocean, a career criminal released from prison only to put together a team to pull off a heist on three Las Vegas casinos.

Bruce Willis, Johnny Depp, and Mark Wahlberg were among the actors who turned down roles in
Ocean’s Eleven
.

Clooney is joined by the likes of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and Julia Roberts with the movie offering much more than just famous faces. While the first movie is the best of the bunch, the two sequels offer a lot of fun with Ocean’s Twelve taking the crew to Europe for a much more comedic crime story while Ocean’s Thirteen returns to Vegas with Al Pacino as the memorable villain. While there is talk of the franchise continuing in some capacity, fans should catch the trilogy on Hulu while they can.
