The Minnesota Vikings traded with the New York Jets to move up from pick No. 11 to pick No. 10 in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.
With the 10th pick, Minnesota drafted a national champion in Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
However, there are some that are not fired up about the pick.
That includes The Volume’s John Middlekauff, who is not quite sold on McCarthy as a player.
“My comp for him was Alex Smith, and with Alex Smith, everything had to go right and it took a while…Half of these guys are not going to be that good…More Alex Smiths become Kenny Picketts and Mac Jones,” Middlekauff said on his podcast Friday morning.

He might be on to something with this take.
The thing with McCarthy is that he wasn’t a four-year starter at Michigan.
He also didn’t get to show off his arm as much as a player like Michael Penix Jr. at Washington or Caleb Williams at USC because Michigan was a true run-first team with Blake Corum.
McCarthy never threw for over 3,000 yards in his college career.
His efficient numbers are a little misleading because of the type of offense that he was in.
He was a game-manager that never had to be the real hero.
Now going to Minnesota, he is going to have to have put the ball in good spots for the likes of Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson.
It will be interesting to see if he can really become better than he was in college.
