Moritz Mohr, the director of Boy Kills Worldhas an encouraging perspective on a potential sequel. A post-apocalyptic action-comedy led by Bill Skarsgård, the movie follows a deaf and mute man who goes by the name Boy. After his family is killed by the ruling dynasty, Boy swears vengeance and begins training to end everyone who hurt him. It was released on April 26 to relatively little attention at the box office, having failed to break through to the top 10 for the weekend.

Boy Kills World‘s post-credit scene implies the potential for a sequel, and Mohr is on board for a follow-up. In an interview with Varietythe director explained that there was always talk of a Boy Kills World 2. The only thing preventing it from being greenlit is the question of audience interest. Mohr intends to wait and see how the movie does with audiences before signing up for a sequel. Check out his quote below:

We talked a lot about that during the entire course of the production and there are so many great ideas out there. The only question right now is do people want to see that? Since it’s not a big studio movie, we have to wait for a moment and see how it turns out. If people like it, we have a few stories that we could tell, and I’d be super excited to do it.

Will Boy Kills World 2 Happen?

The Box Office Results Make It Unlikely

A sequel may not be likely, as it will be difficult to generate the enthusiasm that Mohr is looking for. Boy Kills World‘s box office performance has been woeful. Even in a slow week, the movie failed to break through to the box office top 10. It was blocked by Challengers, Unsung Heroand even the re-release of the 45-year-old Alien. It is expected to earn a mere $1.6 million over the weekend, which is hardly enough to put it on the path to profitability. It will need a strong surge in the next week, which is fairly unlikely.

If it receives adequate attention on streaming platforms, it may give Lionsgate a reason to greenlight a sequel.

Boy Kills World has had relatively positive reviews, which could aid it in the struggle to earn its budget back. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an audience score of 72%, which is helpful, though it fails to draw the allure of an 80% or 90% positive movie. The Tomatometer score is worse, as it sits at 61% at the time of writing. Critics have saddled the movie with an average rating of 4.8 out of 10, which is far from impressive. For a movie that needs word-of-mouth support, that total makes it unlikely to see anything close to profitability.

Boy Kills World Ending Explained

The ending of Boy Kills World recontextualizes the entire film, builds to an unexpected final fight, and even sets up a direction for sequels.

Should the movie not recover during its theatrical run, it could still achieve notoriety through streaming. If it receives adequate attention on streaming platforms, it may give Lionsgate a reason to greenlight a sequel. It is expected to first release on Starz, but Boy Meets World will need its streaming performance to be exceptional. With such a disappointing first weekend, the Bill Skarsgård-led action-comedy will need to perform exceptionally in future weeks and months to ensure that a sequel is still possible.
