China road collapses kill at least 24, officials say | World News

At least 24 people have died after a section of road collapsed in southern China, according to authorities.

Rescuers are on the scene in Guangdong province after a 60-foot stretch of road in the city of Meizhou disappeared into a hole.

Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the collapse, but the mountainous area has experienced heavy rain and storms in recent days.

Authorities said 20 cars had fallen into a large opening in the road around 2 a.m. Wednesday, the Xinhua news agency reported.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that 30 people had been taken to hospital.

Aerial images show how one side of the road collapsed and moved down an adjacent slope.

Witnesses told local media they heard a loud noise and saw a several-meter-wide hole open up behind them after driving along the stretch of road just before it collapsed.

It comes after incessant rain, hail and winds of near-hurricane intensity battered southern China last week.

The conditions forced the evacuation of an entire city of more than 1,700 residents in Guangdong.

Power lines were downed and mobile phone networks disrupted across the region, while rain caused dangerous landslides, swept away homes and destroyed bridges.
