Franck Mawuena leads Remo Stars to dramatic comeback victory against Rivers United

In a gripping showdown rescheduled for Monday, May 6, 2024, Franck Mawuena emerged as the shining star for Remo Stars in their clash against Rivers United in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).

Remo Stars staged a remarkable comeback, securing a thrilling 2-1 triumph over their opponents and edging closer to the NPFL summit, currently occupied by Enugu Rangers International FC.

The match, which saw former Remo Stars striker Andy Okpe put Rivers United ahead in the first half, was a fiercely contested battle from start to finish.

However, it was the second half where Remo Stars truly showcased their resilience, with Franck Mawuena leading the charge. Mawuena orchestrated the turnaround by assisting Hadi Haruna for the crucial equalizer before sealing the victory with a powerful header from a corner-kick late in the game.

The triumph not only narrowed the gap between Remo Stars and Rangers International to a mere point but also injected new intensity into the race for the league title.

Franck Mawuena’s stellar performance underscored his significance to Remo Stars in the NPFL, instilling confidence in Coach Daniel Ogunmodede and the entire team regarding their championship aspirations.

The victory at the Ikenne Stadium further solidified Remo Stars’ dominance at home, where they have dropped just two points throughout the season.

The Nigerian Premier Football League title race is set to heat up further, with Rivers United FC yet to complete their outstanding matches due to their involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Following the league’s pause after matchday 32, action will resume with matchday 33 fixtures scheduled for the weekend of May 25-26.

Rivers United’s upcoming challenges include clashes against Kwara United and Sunshine Stars on May 8 and May 11, respectively. They will then travel to Umuahia to face Abia Warriors before concluding with a home fixture against Niger Tornadoes, rescheduled from matchday 22.
