Israelis demonstrate in Tel Aviv demanding return of Hamas captives, clashes reported

Police were heavily deployed in the area, leading to clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers, the Haaretz newspaper reported.

Einav Zangauker, whose son Matan is detained in Gaza, addressed the rally, according to the Israeli news website Ynet.

“Netanyahu, you choose. It’s Ben Gvir and Smotrich… or my son. It is very simple; whether it be a far-right government or the hostages at home. Now you decide, Prime Minister. “We want to see him make a brave decision,” he said.

Zangauker was referring to National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who oppose reaching a prisoner exchange deal that would stop Israel’s war on Gaza.

The Israeli opposition and the hostages’ families accuse Netanyahu of hindering a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas for his own political survival.

Egypt confirmed on Monday that there is a new proposal for a force in the blockaded Gaza Strip.

“There is a proposal on the table to have a force in Gaza,” Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said during a meeting of the World Economic Forum in Saudi Arabia.

Indirect talks are taking place between Israel and Hamas in both Cairo and Doha with the aim of reaching an agreement that includes a prisoner exchange, under which Israeli captives would be freed in exchange for the release of Palestinians from Israeli prisons.

Tel Aviv believes more than 130 Israelis are detained in Gaza, while Israel holds about 9,100 Palestinians in its prisons.

Israel has waged a deadly military offensive in Gaza since October 1. 7 Hamas cross-border attack that killed almost 1,200 people.

Since then, nearly 34,500 Palestinians have been killed and more than 77,600 injured amid massive destruction and shortages of essential items.

The Israeli war has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel is accused of genocide before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which in January issued an interim ruling ordering Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take steps to ensure humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
