Justin Jefferson is the face of the franchise, but he will get some competition since the Minnesota Vikings acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy with their first selection in the 2024 NFL draft. The wideout is certainly happy to have some certainty at the position that directly impacts his production and the team’s success.

One element, though, could lead to some severe confusion: the name.

Jefferson is often called JJ, and, well, that is also what McCarthy is going with. That daunting chaos is obvious. Not only could fans and announcers encounter some trouble, but so could the teammates and coaches in the locker room and on the field.

McCarthy was asked what he thinks about playing with his new star wideout at his introductory press conference.

Surreal. Honestly, Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Aaron Jones, the big boys Christian Darrisaw, Brian O’Neill, I just met him earlier today, Garrett Bradbury—all great pieces. There are so many more that I could sit up here and list all of them. A lot of great pieces that make this organization what it is and Justin is just a key part of that. He already let me know “I’ll go by Jets,” so we don’t get any confusion there. It’ll be great to get that connection going with all the guys and he’s definitely a key piece to that.

Getting that connection going is indeed a huge part of his job. In the previous four seasons, Jefferson has been an electric target on the field, feasting with Kirk Cousins feeding him the ball. In last season’s final stretch, he continued to produce at an All-Pro level with Nick Mullens under center.

Jefferson is the ultimate friend for any quarterback because he is a master at getting open. Even when he is covered, a passer can still chuck the ball in his direction, knowing he has a good chance to snatch it.

The good news is that the newest Viking and the face of the franchise complement each other well. Jefferson dominates the medium area of the field, and so does McCarthy. Both players are strong in this area, so it could be a perfect marriage.

He reached out to me (on who initiated the contact). He sent me a great text, and I’ll add to that: He told me, “Confidence is key in this league.” Just being able to hear that from him and just be able to get introduced to all the wise words he’s going to be giving me over the years. I’m just extremely excited to and can’t wait to get going.

J.J. McCarthy

Confidence is vital, and McCarthy must have confidence in his skills. He has the athleticism to scramble and run and the arm to make any throw. The most significant weakness is the deep pass, but his arm talent should allow him to hit those at a much higher rate. He seals some of them because he doesn’t quite trust his arm.

The Vikings will go as far in the next few years as McCarthy can take them. If he becomes one of the better passers in football, the organization will compete.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s next step must be to extend Jefferson’s contract to guarantee McCarthy his elite weapon in the future.

Kirk Cousins Is Reportedly Unhappy
