Madonna closed her “Celebration” tour with a trip to the beach: Rio de Janeiro’s famous Copacabana Beach, to be exact, where she put on a huge free show for some 1.6 million fans on Saturday night. It was her final performance during her retrospective tour of the world, as well as her only “Celebration” date in South America, and brought together the largest live crowd of her career.
The estimate of 1.6 million came from Riotur, the city’s official tourism agency. Madonna, who had not performed in Brazil since 2012, was enthusiastic about the evening in Instagram: “There are no words that can express my gratitude!” she wrote in a caption to a drone video showing the beach packed with fans. The same as other At the “Celebration” shows, she invited local stars to come on stage with her: in Rio, her guests were Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar; the latter helped Madonna turn her song “Music” into a samba.
Copacabana Beach has some history when it comes to big pop shows: in 2006, the Rolling Stones played for about 1.5 million Fans there, during a 1994 New Year’s Eve show with Rod Stewart, supposedly drew some 4.2 million assistants.
