News Block takes your privacy seriously. We collect little data, and only what we need to run the site: no user accounts, no advertising trackers, no profiling and no sale of your personal information. This policy explains in plain language what information we process when you visit news-block.com, why we process it, how long we keep it, who we share it with and the rights you have.
Who is responsible for your data
Your personal information is handled by the company that publishes News Block:
Data controller
AZ Medias Limited
Office C, 23/F COS Centre, 56 Tsun Yip Street, Kwun Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong
For any question about your data: contact@news-block.com
Information we collect
We do not offer user accounts, and you can read the entire site without giving us any personal information. We process the following data:
- Technical server logs. When you visit the site, the servers of our hosting provider automatically record technical information such as your IP address, the date and time of the request, the page requested, the referring page and your browser's user agent. These logs are used for security and to keep the service running properly.
- Cookie-free audience measurement. We measure our audience with our own tool, without cookies and without any third party. For each page view, we record the page and its title, the referring website (its domain name only), the type of device (desktop, mobile or tablet), the browser, the operating system and, when our server provides it, the country. Your IP address is not stored: at the time of your visit, it is combined with your browser's user agent and a key that changes every day to compute a pseudonymous visitor identifier. This lets us count daily visitors without knowing who you are and without recognizing you from one day to the next. Visits from known bots are not recorded.
- Article ratings. If you rate an article, we record your vote along with a daily pseudonymous identifier, your IP address and your browser's user agent, only to prevent multiple votes and abuse.
- Messages you send us. If you email us or use the form below an article, we process what you send: your message, any photo you attach and, if you write by email, your email address. For messages sent through the form, we also keep your IP address and browser user agent to fight spam. Photos are re-encoded when we receive them, which removes their metadata (such as the location where they were taken).
- Newsletter and article updates. If you sign up for our newsletter or to follow updates on an article, we record your email address, the form or article concerned, the date, your IP address and your browser's user agent, to prevent abusive sign-ups.
How we use your information
- Providing and securing the service (server logs, protecting our forms against abuse).
- Measuring our audience, in aggregate, to understand which content interests our readers and improve the site.
- Answering your messages and handling your tips and correction requests, to verify, correct or update an article.
- Sending you the newsletter or updates on an article you follow, only if you asked for them.
We do not use your data for any other purpose: no profiling, no automated decision-making and no advertising.
Newsletter and unsubscribing
Signing up for the newsletter or for updates on an article is optional, and we use your email address only for that purpose. You can unsubscribe at any time, with a single click on the unsubscribe link included in every email we send you, or by writing to us at contact@news-block.com.
Cookies
The public pages of News Block do not set any cookies of their own, neither to make the site work nor to measure our audience, which works without cookies. Only the restricted login area used by the newsroom sets a technical session cookie, which is strictly necessary for authentication. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and our share buttons are plain links: no code from social networks is loaded on our pages. You can view or delete cookies at any time in your browser settings.
Advertising
News Block does not currently display advertising, and no advertising network collects data on our pages. If we introduce advertising, this policy will be updated to describe it and the choices available to you.
Service providers and sharing
Your data is accessible only to authorized members of the publisher's team and to the technical providers that work on its behalf. The site is hosted by o2switch, in France:
Hosting provider
SAS o2switch
222-224 Boulevard Gustave Flaubert, 63000 Clermont-Ferrand, France
Phone: +33 (0)4 44 44 60 40
Website: o2switch.fr
The artificial intelligence services we use to write articles and create illustrations receive only public news material. The messages, photos and email addresses you send us are handled by our team and are never passed on to them.
We do not sell, rent or share your personal information with third parties, except where the law requires us to.
Where your data is processed
The site and its data are hosted in France by o2switch, within the European Union. Because the publisher, AZ Medias Limited, is based in Hong Kong, your data may also be accessed from there. If you live in the United States, this means your information is processed outside the U.S. In all cases, it is accessed only by authorized members of the publisher's team and its hosting provider, with the security measures described in this policy.
How long we keep your data
- Technical server logs: for a limited period, generally a few months, for security and operational purposes.
- Audience statistics: deleted after about 180 days.
- Article ratings: as long as the article remains online; ratings are only ever shown as totals.
- Messages, tips and correction requests: as long as needed to handle your request.
- Newsletter and article updates: until you unsubscribe, which you can do at any time.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to access, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you, or to stop using it. When we use your data based on your consent (newsletter, article updates, messages you send us), you can withdraw that consent at any time.
To exercise your rights, email us at contact@news-block.com, stating which right you wish to exercise and which data it concerns. We may ask you to confirm your identity to protect your information. We respond within the time limits set by applicable law, and we will never treat you differently for exercising your rights.
California residents (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, gives you specific rights over your personal information.
- Categories of personal information we collect: identifiers (your email address if you subscribe or write to us; your IP address in server logs and form submissions); internet or other electronic network activity (pages viewed, referring site, type of device, browser and operating system, country); the content of the messages you send us; and photos you choose to send us. We collect this information directly from you and from your browser, for the purposes described in this policy.
- Your rights: you can request to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose; request access to it and a copy of it; request its correction or deletion; and opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information. You may designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
We do not sell or share your personal information, as those terms are defined by California law, including for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not use or disclose sensitive personal information.
To make a request, email us at contact@news-block.com. Residents of other states with consumer privacy laws can exercise the rights those laws give them in the same way.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
News Block is a general-audience news site. It is not directed to children under 13, and in accordance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not send us any personal information, for example by signing up for the newsletter or writing to us. If you believe that a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Visitors from the European Union (GDPR)
Our site is hosted in France, within the European Union. If you are in the European Union or the European Economic Area, the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) gives you the right to access, rectify and erase your data, to restrict or object to its processing and to data portability (Articles 15 to 21 GDPR), as well as the right to withdraw your consent at any time.
The legal bases for our processing are our legitimate interest in running, securing and measuring the audience of the site (server logs, cookie-free audience measurement, protection of our forms; Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) and your consent for the newsletter, article updates and the messages you send us (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR).
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority, in particular in the country where you live; in France, this is the CNIL (cnil.fr). We would appreciate the chance to address your concern first, so please feel free to write to us.
Security
We take appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data against loss, unauthorized access, disclosure or alteration. No system is completely secure, but we continuously improve our safeguards and respond promptly in the event of an incident.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy, for example to reflect new legal requirements or new features of the site. Any change will be published on this page, with a new "last updated" date.
