The video is a rare peek at the many stages of preparing for a sketch. In showing the dress rehearsal, the clip reveals how SNL cast member Heidi Gardner saw the Beavis and Butthead makeup before the live tapingwhich only makes her later reaction to seeing Day even more amusing. The sketch proved difficult to film while staying in character, for even one of the most seasoned SNL alums.

The SaturdayNightLive cast’s struggles to remain in character extended beyond rehearsals. Gosling couldn’t help but laugh during the live airing, and Gardner broke character when she saw Gosling and Day’s Beavis and Butthead costumes again. Although Gardner had seen their appearance before the live airing of the show, as the video shows, she still had trouble holding in her laughter. Their breaking of the fourth wall made the sketch even bettercritics and audiences proclaimed. It’s nice to see the performers find humor in the sketches they create just as viewers do.

Although Gardner admitted to feeling unprofessional while breaking character, the Beavis and Butthead sketch has still been declared one of the best SNL skits in years. Lauded for being simple yet hilarious, the cast’s genuine enjoyment and fun during the scene only made it better. While it will be difficult to top the viral Beavis and Butthead sketch, Saturday Night Live season 49 will continue to air on NBC on Saturday nights at 11:30PM in the coming ways.
