The controversy surrounding Velma‘s season 2 finale is not the first time the show has been met with backlash. Since its release on Max in 2023, Scooby-Doo fans have been disappointed with its content. The show has received criticism for not connecting well with the existing Scooby-Doo content and ruining some of the fan-favorite Scooby Doo characters.

It has also been said that the show does not have a clear target demographic, which makes it challenging for it to land with audiences. It’s clear that Velma wasn’t made for kids, but it also doesn’t appeal to adults who watch cartoons because the show often pokes fun at them. The humor of the show has not been well-received, overall, as many have dubbed it to be too raunchy, mean-spirited, and over-the-top meta.

Velma

A darkly comedic and mature take on the Scooby-Doo franchise, Velma sees the titular character, played by Mindy Kaling, taking the spotlight in a retelling of her origins, leading to her joining Mystery Inc. A significant departure from the family-friendly rendition released decades ago, Velma will modernize the characters and has cast Sam Richardson as Shaggy, Constance Wu as Daphne, and Glenn Howerton as Fred. Scooby-Doo will not be featured in the show, as it features the earlier days of the crew as they solve murderous mysteries and find themselves getting in over their heads more often than not.
