Shirin Su lagoon in western Iran filled with water after recent downpours

Recent rains in Iran have raised the water level in the drying Shirin Su Lagoon in western Hamedan province, the head of the Environmental Protection Department of Hamedan’s Kaboudar Ahang town said on Wednesday.

Sirous Azizi told IRNA that the 300-hectare artificial lagoon, located 40 kilometers from the provincial town of Kobudar Ahang, had experienced an alarming decrease in water level due to low rainfall in the country.

Considering the width of the water body, the lagoon hosts a large number of waterfowl and riverine migratory birds in the rainy seasons, Azizi said.

Recent downpours have welcomed gray herons, green ducks, teals and, most of all, flamingos to the lagoon.

In addition to aquatic species, the wetland is also the habitat of water snakes that come out of the water and sunbathe on the rocks at the edge of the lagoon.
