Leslye Headland, the showrunner for The Acolytesaid that her new series is set to contain tons of references to the history of Star Warsand that they’ll act as the perfect homage to the galaxy’s 47-year history. The upcoming Star Wars show is groundbreaking in several ways. The Acolyte‘s story is set to focus, at least partially, on dark side Force users, and it will be set during the High Republic era, which has never been seen in live-action before. Though it will break new ground for the franchise, it’s also set to pay its respects to the Star Wars stories that have come before.

In an interview with Total Film (via Eat News), Headland said that the decision to include so many references came from her desire to include every part of Star Wars.

“It’s a show packed with everything I wanted to explore: I wanted EU (Expanded Universe) stuff in there, references to the original trilogy, The Phantom Menace, the Disney sequels… it’s absolutely packed. Because you never know, you may not get the chance again.”

Headland has gone on record multiple times to express how much she enjoys the different areas of Star Wars. Headland has teased that The Acolyte draws inspiration from Legends, and her latest quote shows how devoted she and the rest of the show’s creators are to incorporating the different eras of Star Wars. It’s a sign of the love Headland has for the franchise, and if her passion shines through in the finished product, it should result in The Acolyte honoring Star Wars wonderfully.

Here’s everything we know about The Acolyte’s cast and the characters they will be portraying in Star Wars’ most mysterious project yet.

The Acolyte Is A Perfect Celebration Of Star Wars’ History

Star Wars is a massive, sprawling franchise. With decades worth of storytelling and thousands of stories in the form of books, comics, shows, movies, and more, becoming familiar with all of it, let alone paying it all proper respect, is very difficult. Headland seems intent on trying, though, and The Acolyte seems like it could be the perfect way to celebrate the entirety of Star Wars. The best way to do that is by including every part of the franchise, from mainstream movies and shows to even the most obscure comics and books of the Expanded Universe.

The Acolyte
‘s first two episodes premiere on Disney+ on June 4.

Only someone who is deeply passionate about Star Wars would be so dedicated to representing every side of the franchise. The fact that The Acolyte is set so far away from the main Skywalker saga, and the bulk of Star Wars canon, only makes that more true. Headland likely had to work quite hard to include as many references as she wanted to, which proves that she loves Star Wars. There are many reasons to be excited about The Acolyteand the fact that it seems like a love letter to the franchise is just the most recent addition to that list.
