Hogwarts Legacy contains an abundance of locations and secrets to explore, but if players are interested in visiting Azkaban, they’ll need to follow a couple of steps to get there. Despite being one of the most memorable places from Harry Potterit can only be accessed by a specific group of students. In fact, a certain irreversible decision can bar players from getting into Azkaban in Hogwarts Legacy entirely, so it’s crucial that they know which choices to make early on.

Throughout Harry Potter history, Azkaban has housed some of the wizarding world’s most dangerous dark witches and wizards, such as Bellatrix Lestrange and Bartemius Crouch Junior. Luckily, players who like to dabble in the Unforgivable Curses won’t have to worry about being sentenced to prison time themselves, as the pros of dark magic outweigh the cons in the RPG. Still, those wanting to pay a friendly visit to Azkaban in Hogwarts Legacy can do so, provided they make the correct choice.

Only Hufflepuff Students Can Go To Azkaban In Hogwarts Legacy

The Other Three Houses Can’t Visit Azkaban

Aside from a unique common room and some different interactions with students, each of Hogwarts’ houses has an exclusive quest. These quests vary greatly in their storytelling while ultimately introducing players to the ghost of Richard Jackdaw. Those players who joined Hufflepuffwill see their exclusive quest lead them to Azkaban in Hogwarts Legacy. This is the only way to enter the prison without using mods, making it impossible for Gryffindor, Slytherin, and Ravenclaw students to visit Azkaban, so those players who are in other houses will need to create a new save in which they choose Hufflepuff to experience this content.

While players can link up their
Harry Potter
Fan Club results to determine the wand and house chosen via a quiz on the site, they can also manually choose their house at the start of
Hogwarts Legacy
which allows them to use different save files to see all the game has to offer and to unlock all of its house-specific achievements/trophies.

After progressing through the game’s first few missions, and then saving an elderly woman near the Great Lake, the protagonist will receive a letter via owl, instructing them to speak to the portrait of Eldritch Diggory – great-great-grandfather of Cedric and former Minister for Magic – in the Hufflepuff common room, who will inform them of an unsolved murder. From there, it’s as simple as following the “Prisoner of Love” quest in which they will meet the former Auror – and Diggory’s great-niece – Helen Thistlewood. Helen dealt with a murder case connected to the book players recovered from the Restricted Section earlier on in the game and explains that Richard Jackdaw vanished, and his ghost briefly appeared headless in Hogsmeade.

Despite all the attention to detail that developers gave in Hogwarts Legacy, there are still several big questions that were left unanswered.

What Happens Inside Azkaban In Hogwarts Legacy?

The Exclusive Quest Revolves Around A Prison Break

Helen reveals that Anne Thisbe – a girl who was in a relationship with Jackdaw at the time – has been wrongfully imprisoned for his murder after a false testimony from Apollonia Black, who was jealous of the couple. Helen and the player Apparate into Azkaban and are instantly met with some hostile Dementors, who Helen dispels using the Expecto Patronum charm. However, these soul-sucking creatures aren’t the most dangerous beings within Hogwarts Legacy‘s prison. The two eventually find Anne, who gives the player some clues as to the location of Jackdaw’s pages, but before the two can leave, she lashes out and attacks Helen, critically wounding her. So, while Helen and the player are able to escape in the end, it’s not without a few intense moments.

Once the student and Helen have Apparated back out to safety, it’s impossible to visit Azkaban for a second time. Ultimately, it’s quite a brief and linear stay, essentially walking down one corridor and hearing the cries of the prisoners before reaching Anne at the end of the hall. For Harry Potter fans who have seen or read about the notorious prison, however, it’s a worthwhile venture nonetheless. Although developer Avalanche Software has stated no DLC is in the works for the game at present, it would have been a great opportunity to expand upon this quest and potentially allow other Houses to join in on the fun. Hopefully, the game’s sequel – which Warner Bros. Discovery has hinted at plans for – will let all of its players explore the iconic prison more fully, but for now, only Hufflepuffs can get into Azkaban in Hogwarts Legacy.
